Story

Adıyaman Castle is a significant structure rising on an artificial mound right in the city center, bearing witness to Adıyaman's deep-rooted history. The mound on which the castle stands is believed to have a history dating back to 3000 BC. The mound was also inhabited during the Commagene Kingdom period and was used as a settlement due to its strategic importance. Strengthened during the Roman Empire, the castle came under the rule of many different civilizations such as the Byzantines, Umayyads, Abbasids, Seljuks, Mamluks, and Ottomans. Each civilization left its mark on the castle, repairing and strengthening the structure. A large part of the castle we see today was shaped by the repairs and additions made during the Mamluk period, especially by Sultan Malik al-Nasir Muhammad in the 14th century. During this period, the castle was used both as a defensive structure and as an administrative center. The architecture of the castle is a complex structure bearing the traces of different periods. Although its outer walls and bastions have deteriorated over time, the general outlines of the castle are still visible. Being built on a mound provided natural protection for the castle. Although it is known that there were mosques, hammams, and civilian structures in the inner castle section, no remains of these structures have survived to the present day. Excavations and research carried out at the foot of the castle continue to shed light on Adıyaman's multi-layered history.
