Description

The monumental tomb and cult area of King Mithridates, the father of King Antiochos I of Commagene.

Story

Arsameia is one of the important centers of the Kingdom of Commagene and served as the sacred area (Hierothesion) of King I. Antiochos Theos's father, Mithridates Kallinikos. The ancient city is located on a steep hill by the banks of the Kahta River. This site is one of the cultural centers established by Antiochos to show his respect for his father and other ancestors, and it is also known as 'Nymphaion' (Sacred Spring). Among the most remarkable remains of the city are a massive rock relief and an inscription. The relief depicts I. Antiochos shaking hands with the god Herakles (a dexiosis scene) and perfectly reflects the Greco-Persian cultural synthesis of the region. The inscription details the purpose and rules of the establishment of Antiochos's cultural center. Just below the inscription, there is a narrow tunnel that descends approximately 150 meters and is believed to reach a burial chamber. This tunnel increases curiosity about the mysterious rituals and underground cult of the Kingdom of Commagene. With this structure on the road to Mount Nemrut, Arsameia is the second most important stop after Nemrut for understanding the religious, political, and artistic identity of the Kingdom of Commagene.

Visit Tips

  • Entry to the site is subject to a fee; Museum Card is valid.
