Story

Besni Castle rises on a steep hill of strategic importance right next to the Besni district in the west of Adıyaman. The area where the castle is located has been continuously inhabited since the Hittite and Roman periods. However, most of the magnificent remains we see today were strengthened during the Byzantine Empire and gained great importance especially during the Islamic conquests (Abbassid period). The castle played a key role in the border conflicts between the Abbassid caliphate and the Byzantine Empire, changing hands multiple times. Throughout the Middle Ages, it came under the control of various powers such as the Seljuks, Ayyubids, Mamluks, and the Dulkadiroğulları Principality. Each of these principalities renovated the castle's walls, towers, and internal structures according to their military needs. As a result, the castle has a multi-layered architectural structure. After the Ottoman Empire firmly established its dominance in the region, it continued to be used as a military base for a while, but gradually lost its importance. Inside the castle, there are water cisterns, secret passages, and remnants of various living spaces. The panoramic view of the Besni Plain and the surrounding mountains from the top of Besni Castle is breathtaking. The castle has observed the trade routes and military movements of the region for centuries and has survived to this day as a strong symbol of the historical transition between Çukurova and Southeastern Anatolia.

• Although the castle gate is usually open, it may be restricted due to restoration work or seasonal reasons.
