Story

Emir Sultan Mosque, located in the Emir Sultan neighborhood of the Yıldırım district of Bursa, is an important mosque dating back to the early periods of the Ottoman Empire. The structure was built in the name of Emir Sultan (Muhammad Shamsuddin Bukhari), son-in-law of Yıldırım Bayezid and one of the prominent scholars of his time. Although the first mosque was built in the late 14th or early 15th century, the current structure has been rebuilt many times after various earthquakes and fires. It was severely damaged in the great earthquake of 1795 and was subsequently repaired by Sultan Selim III. The mosque, which was again destroyed in the 1855 Bursa earthquake, was completely rebuilt during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz. This reconstruction process led to significant changes in the architectural style of the mosque, giving it its current Baroque-influenced Ottoman architectural features. The mosque's courtyard also houses the Emir Sultan Tomb and a fountain, making the complex a külliye (Ottoman architectural complex). The tomb contains the graves of Emir Sultan and his family and attracts a large number of visitors, especially during religious holidays and special occasions. Emir Sultan Mosque is more than just a place of worship; it is an integral part of Bursa's spiritual and cultural identity.
