Description

A historical stone bridge over the Göksu River, connecting Malatya and Adıyaman, featuring architecture from the Seljuk-Ottoman period.

Story

Göksu Bridge is one of the most important historical crossing structures in the region, located over the Göksu River in the north of Adıyaman, along the historic Silk Road route. The bridge is situated at a strategic point connecting the provinces of Malatya and Adıyaman. Although the exact date of construction is not known, the techniques and architectural style used suggest that the structure may have been built during the Great Seljuk Empire or the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate period (12th-13th century). In later periods, the bridge was repaired and used by the Ottoman Empire, which resulted in the combination of Seljuk and Ottoman architectural features in the structure. The bridge has preserved its resistance against the flow of water for centuries with its sturdy stone craftsmanship, pointed arches, and high piers. Beyond being merely a physical crossing point, Göksu Bridge has served as a vital artery facilitating the cultural and commercial flow of the region. This structure, which has witnessed the passage of caravans and armies, has also become a symbol of the social and cultural ties between Adıyaman and Malatya. The surrounding natural landscape, especially when combined with the rushing flow of the Göksu River in the spring months, offers a captivating setting for photography. Despite the additions and repairs made during different historical periods, the bridge is a remarkable architectural wonder that has largely preserved its originality.
