Story

Kahta Castle is a historical structure located near the village of Eski Kahta in the Kahta district of Adıyaman province, in the lands where the Kingdom of Commagene once reigned. This castle was used by various civilizations starting from the Roman Empire period and maintained its strategic importance in every era. It played a significant role, especially during the Crusades, and was later actively used by the Seljuks and Mamluks. The current structure of the castle largely reflects the repairs and additions made during the Mamluk period. The castle also stands out due to its proximity to Arsameia, the capital of the Commagene Kingdom, and bears witness to the rich history of this region. Architecturally, its construction on a steep hill allowed it to make the best use of natural defensive advantages. With its thick curtain walls, bastions, and inner courtyards, it exhibits typical features of a medieval castle. Although parts of the castle have been destroyed over time, traces of cisterns, storerooms, and living quarters are still visible.
