Story

Palanlı Cave is a critical archaeological discovery that takes the historical depth of Adıyaman back to much earlier than the Kingdom of Commagene, specifically to the Paleolithic Age (Old Stone Age). Located near the city center of Adıyaman, around Palanlı Village, this cave houses some of the oldest traces of human settlement in the Euphrates-Tigris basin. Excavations in the cave have uncovered stone tools, obsidian fragments, and animal bone remains belonging to hunter-gatherer communities that lived in the region approximately between 40,000 and 10,000 BC. These findings provide significant data about the lifestyles, hunting techniques, and climatic conditions of people during that era. Palanlı Cave is of great scientific importance not only for Adıyaman but also for understanding early human migration and settlement patterns throughout Southeastern Anatolia and Mesopotamia. The cave has a natural rock shelter structure, demonstrating how early humans provided shelter against harsh natural conditions. The natural environment surrounding the cave offers visitors a prehistoric atmosphere. The discovery and study of Palanlı Cave have played a key role in illuminating the periods before the transition to agriculture and settled life in the region. The cave is a protected site and opens a window to the region's earliest inhabitants.
