Perre Ancient City Museum
Description
Perre Ancient City, one of the five major cities of the Commagene Kingdom, is one of Adıyaman's important historical heritages.
Story
Perre Ancient City is located approximately 5 kilometers from the city center of Adıyaman, within the borders of Örenli Neighborhood. Known as one of the five major cities of the Commagene Kingdom, Perre has been an important settlement throughout history thanks to its strategic location and fertile lands. While the history of the city dates back to the Paleolithic Age, it experienced its most glorious period during the Commagene Kingdom and Roman Empire eras. During the Roman Empire, especially during the reign of Emperor Diocletian (284-305 AD), it became an important military center and road station. During this period, aqueducts were built to bring water from the Cendere Stream to meet the city's water needs. One of the most striking features of Perre Ancient City is its large and well-preserved necropolis area. This necropolis contains rock-cut tombs, sarcophagi, and underground chambers. Many of the tombs are family tombs and feature Latin or Greek inscriptions and reliefs. These inscriptions and reliefs provide valuable information about the lifestyle, beliefs, and social structure of the period. The city also contains remains of Roman baths, a basilica, agoras, and residential buildings...
