Story

Adana Grand Mosque is one of the most magnificent and historical structures of the city, built during the reign of the Ramazanid Principality in Adana. Its construction began in 1507 by Ramazanoğlu Halil Bey and was completed in 1541 during the time of his son Piri Mehmet Pasha. The mosque boasts a unique architectural style, blending Seljuk, Mamluk, and Ottoman influences. Built as a complex (külliye), it comprises a mosque, madrasa, tomb, and imaret (soup kitchen). The madrasa section, in particular, is known as one of the important educational institutions of that era. The interior of the mosque stands out with its intricate hand-drawn decorations, tile mosaics, and exquisite woodwork. Its mihrab and minbar feature special details reflecting the artistic understanding of the period. The minaret, constructed with cut stone masonry, is dazzling with its harmonious combination of red brick and stone. This structure, bearing the traces of the Ramazanid era, holds a significant place in Adana's cultural identity. For centuries, it has served not only as a place of worship but also as a center for the city's social and cultural life. Today, the mosque is still actively used and welcomes many local and foreign visitors. The historical ablution fountain (şadırvan) and plane trees in the mosque's courtyard offer a peaceful atmosphere to visitors.
