Description

The magnificent walls, triumphal arch, theater, and aqueducts of Anavarza, the capital of Cilicia during the Roman and Byzantine periods.

Story

Anavarza is one of the largest and most important ancient cities of Cilicia and has secured a solid place in the dusty pages of history with its name meaning 'Invincible'. During the Roman Empire (especially in the Severus period), it became the capital of the region and was adorned with magnificent structures during this time. The city maintained its importance during the Byzantine period, but was often devastated by earthquakes and Arab invasions. Among the most impressive remnants of Anavarza are the three-arched Victory Arch, the main street (columned street) 20 meters wide, the theater, the stadium, and the 1500-meter-long city walls. One of the most striking features of the city is the medieval castle rising on the steep cliffs outside the walls. Additionally, the massive aqueducts that meet the city's water needs also stand out as a marvel of engineering. Anavarza houses the largest archaeological potential of Adana and is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, which proves its universal value.
