Description
Bebekli Church, located in the Seyhan district of Adana, is one of the city's important historical and religious structures.
Story
Bebekli Church, officially known as St. Paul Catholic Church, is a historical building located in the center of Adana, on Ali Münif Yeğenağa Street. The church was built between 1880 and 1890 by the Jesuit order. It takes its name from the bronze statue of the infant Jesus located at the top of the church's bell tower. This is also why it is known as 'Bebekli Kilise' (Church with a Baby) among the local people. Architecturally, it has a structure that blends Gothic and Romanesque styles. Built of cut stone, the church has a three-nave basilica plan. The interior is striking with elegant columns, high vaulted ceilings, and colorful stained-glass windows. The stained-glass windows depict scenes from the Bible and figures of saints. One of the most distinctive features of the church is the statue of the infant Jesus on top of the bell tower, which gives the church its name, and this statue has become an important part of Adana's skyline. The church is not only a place of worship but also an important indicator of Adana's multicultural past and the presence of its Christian community. It has reached the present day after undergoing various restorations over the years. Visitors can breathe in the historical atmosphere of the church, examine its architectural details, and experience Adana's cultural diversity. Currently, the church is still actively open for worship, serving as an important center for the local Christian community and an attractive stop for tourists. The area where the church is located, with its narrow streets and old buildings reflecting Adana's historical texture, also offers visitors a pleasant opportunity for exploration. Bebekli Church continues to be passed on to future generations as an important part of Adana's cultural heritage.
