Ethnography Museum (Old Courthouse)
Description
A cultural museum established in the old courthouse building, which is an example of 19th-century Ottoman civil architecture.
Story
The building of the Ethnography Museum was constructed in the second half of the 19th century and was initially used as the Adana Courthouse. This structure is both an administrative center and an elegant example of the civil architecture of the period. In the early years of the Republic, in 1924, this building began to serve alongside the Archaeology Museum and was later transformed into a museum showcasing ethnographic artifacts. With this decision, the rich cultural diversity of Çukurova, traditional lifestyles, and folk arts began to be documented here. The museum's collection houses a wide range of objects related to Yörük culture, local costumes, examples of carpets and kilims, everyday items, and agricultural tools, extending from the Taurus Mountains to Çukurova. These artifacts provide a unique resource for understanding the historical and sociological structure of the region. The museum serves not only as an exhibition space but also functions as a memory place that preserves and conveys Adana's multi-layered identity.
