Description

A large castle built on steep cliffs overlooking the Göksu River, dating back to the Cilician Armenian Kingdom.

Story

Feke Castle is strategically located on steep cliffs where the Göksu River has formed a deep canyon, in the south of the Feke district. The castle, believed to have been built during the Byzantine period (9th century), later became one of the most important defense and observation points of the Cilician Armenian Kingdom (11th–14th centuries). Thanks to its control over narrow passages and its dominance over important roads in the region, the castle also played a key role for the Crusaders and other military forces. Structures such as walls, towers, water cisterns, living and storage areas have survived to this day. Feke Castle is one of the most impressive examples of medieval military architecture in the Taurus Mountains. The view of the Göksu River and the surrounding mountains from the castle is magnificent.
