Kızyusuflar (Sirkeli) Mound
Description
A mound located on the banks of the Ceyhan River that contains a king relief (Muwatalli) from the Hittite period.
Story
Sirkeli Mound is one of the oldest and strategically most important settlements for the Hittites in the Çukurova Delta. On the rocky slope right next to the mound, there is a monumental rock relief attributed to Hittite Great King II. Muwatalli (13th century BC), depicting a king in a gesture of respect towards the gods. This relief is a concrete evidence of the Hittites' political and military dominance extending to the southern Cilicia region. The area has also been settled during the Roman and Byzantine periods, but it gained its greatest significance during the Bronze Age and the Hittite period. Excavations at the mound provide critical information for understanding the historical continuity of the region, cultural transitions, and agricultural practices of the time. Although the rock relief has been worn down due to natural and human factors, it remains one of the most powerful monuments showcasing Adana's thousands of years of history.
