Description

A magnificent castle from the Middle Ages, built on a steep hill overlooking the center of Kozan district.

Story

Kozan Castle (formerly known as Sis Castle) has been one of the most important defense and administrative centers of the Cilicia region throughout history. Although the exact date of its construction is not known, there are traces indicating it was used during the Roman period. However, the castle experienced its brightest period during the Cilician Armenian Kingdom (1080–1375). The capital of the kingdom, Sis (Kozan), was strongly protected thanks to this castle. Built on steep cliffs, the castle has maintained its strategic importance for centuries with its double-layered wall system, towers, and inner courtyards. Kozan Castle was not only a military structure but also a center where the Armenian kings' coronation ceremonies were held and political decisions were made. After it came under the control of the Ramazanoğulları Beylik and later the Ottoman Empire, it was used for a while but eventually lost its military significance. Today, the castle draws attention with its majestic silhouette overlooking the center of Kozan and offers visitors a glimpse into the history and landscape of this mountainous part of Çukurova.
