Description
Located in Ceyhan district of Adana, Kurtkulağı Caravanserai is one of the important stops on the Anatolian trade routes, dating back to the Ottoman period.
Story
Kurtkulağı Caravanserai is located in Kurtkulağı village, Ceyhan district of Adana. This structure, estimated to have been built in 1630 during the reign of Murad IV in the early 17th century, was constructed on important trade routes of the period to provide accommodation, rest, and safe passage for caravans. Its location on the Adana-Aleppo road increased the strategic importance of the caravanserai. The structure exhibits a beautiful example of classical Ottoman caravanserai architecture. Built of cut stone, it has a rectangular plan. Its inner courtyard is surrounded by rooms, stables, and other sections. In the middle of the courtyard, there is a remnant of a fountain whose water has not survived to the present day. Although the caravanserai has undergone various restorations over time, it has largely managed to preserve its original architectural texture. The stone masonry and arched passages seen on its walls reflect the mastery of the artisans of the period. Beyond being just a lodging place, the caravanserai also served as a social and economic center. Merchants, artisans, and travelers who came with the caravans gathered here, engaging in cultural interaction, trade, and communication. In this respect, Kurtkulağı Caravanserai is an important cultural heritage that sheds light on the social and economic history of Anatolia. Today, visitors can wander through the caravanserai's spacious courtyard, explore its rooms, and breathe in the atmosphere of the past. There are also information panels explaining the history and importance of the structure. The caravanserai is a must-see for those who want to discover the rich history of Adana.
