Description

Akyatan Lake and its surroundings, one of Turkey's largest lagoons, are an important breeding and resting area for migratory birds and sea turtles.

Story

Akyatan Lake is the largest lagoon of the Çukurova Delta and is protected by the Ramsar Convention as one of the most important wetlands of the Mediterranean. This region, located on migratory routes, hosts over 300 species of birds. Especially in the winter months, thousands of flamingos, pelicans, and various waterfowl take refuge here. The diversity of birds in the region makes it an internationally significant Important Bird Area (IBA). The lagoon is also one of the important breeding grounds for the endangered loggerhead (caretta caretta) and green (chelonia mydas) sea turtles; every summer, the turtles come here to lay their eggs. Akyatan is a rich area not only in terms of biodiversity but also in terms of the region's fishing culture. It offers unique opportunities for birdwatching and nature photography.
