Tepebağ Historical Houses
Description
Streets where traditional Adana mansions from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are concentrated, located on Tepebağ Mound.
Story
Tepebağ Historical Houses are examples of civil architecture that define the character of Adana's oldest neighborhood. This neighborhood, built on a mound, became a prestigious area during the Ottoman period where wealthy merchant and administrative families constructed mansions overlooking the river with scenic views. The mansions are generally two-story buildings with courtyards and bay windows, built from a combination of cut stone, adobe, and wooden beams. These houses are designed with thick walls, small windows, and cool courtyards suitable for the hot Çukurova climate. The architecture of the houses showcases the stone craftsmanship and decorative arts of the period, particularly in the door and window frames. The Historical Houses area is currently protected as an urban site and is an ideal place to experience Adana's historical texture, street rhythm, and traditional way of life.
