Castle and Walls

Description

A castle built on a hill overlooking the Ceyhan River, known as the 'Castle of the Snakes', dating back to the Armenian Kingdom period.

Story

Yılankale is one of the most magnificent medieval castles in Cilicia, built on a volcanic hill overlooking the Ceyhan Plain and the river. Due to its steep location and long, winding walls, it is also referred to as the 'Castle of Snakes' among the locals. The construction date of the castle dates back to the 11th or 12th century, during the period of the Cilician Armenian Kingdom. The castle was used as a strategic base to control the plains, caravan routes, and river crossings in the region at that time. It played an important role during the Crusades and became one of the most significant castles of the Armenian Principality. After passing into the hands of the Ramazanoğulları and then the Ottoman administration, it was used for a while but later lost its significance. The three-story wall system, its towers, and inner courtyards are a striking example of the military architecture of the period. Today, the castle, with its solitary silhouette rising in the middle of the Ceyhan Plain, offers visitors a medieval atmosphere and panoramic views.
