Natural Area

Description

A magnificent medieval sea fortress built on a small island on the shores of the İskenderun Bay.

Story

Yumurtalık Castle (formerly known as Ayas) was built for the defense of Yumurtalık (Ayas), one of the most important port cities of Cilicia. Although the foundations of the castle likely date back to the Byzantine period, the main structure as it stands today was largely shaped during the period of the Cilician Armenian Kingdom (12th-14th centuries). Due to its strategic location, the castle attracted the interest of maritime states such as Venice and Genoa, playing a vital role in the control of trade and maritime activities in the region. The castle was once under the control of the Venetians and was later captured by the Ramazanoğulları Beylik and finally the Ottoman Empire. The castle is built on an island close to the shore and is connected to the mainland by a bridge or natural causeway. The castle is an important example of maritime and military architecture from the period when maritime trade was intense.
