Description

A museum with rich collections from the Hittite, Phrygian, and Roman periods, originating from Afyonkarahisar, Kütahya, Uşak, and Denizli.

Story

The Afyon Archaeology Museum is one of the most important institutions illuminating the rich history of Afyonkarahisar and the surrounding provinces (Kütahya, Uşak, Denizli), located at the intersection of the Aegean and Central Anatolia. The museum began operating in its current building in 1971, and its collection spans a wide time period from the Paleolithic Era to the Ottoman period. The most valuable pieces in the museum are artifacts that shed light on Afyon's prehistoric period; particularly, the items excavated from the Phrygian Valley around Afyon and regions influenced by the Lydians attract great interest. The museum's exhibitions progress in a chronological order. Ceramics and stone tools from the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods demonstrate the earliest signs of settlement in the region. Seals, ceramics, and small statues from the Hittite period prove Afyon's significance as the western border of the Hittite Empire. The richest collection belongs to the Phrygian period; reliefs, inscriptions, and everyday objects excavated from Phrygian monuments reveal the cultural and religious life of this civilization. Statues, sarcophagi, mosaics, and coins from the Roman period also constitute an important part of the museum. In particular, the sarcophagi excavated from Roman necropolises illustrate how significant a crossroads the region was for the Roman Empire. The museum not only displays artifacts but also plays a vital role in raising local historical awareness and laying the groundwork for academic research. It is an indispensable stop for those who wish to see the layered history of Afyon under one roof.
