Story

Afyonkarahisar has been one of Anatolia's important settlements throughout history, hosting many structures that carry this rich past into the present day. Located in the heart of the city, Afyon Mansions are among the most striking parts of this architectural heritage. Dating mostly from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, these mansions offer unique interpretations of Ottoman civil architecture specific to Afyonkarahisar. Most of the mansions were built with stone or adobe on the lower floors, and timber frames with wooden or baghdadi plaster on the upper floors. Spacious courtyards, bay windows, wooden carved ceilings, and frescoes on the walls reveal the aesthetic richness of these structures. The interiors typically consist of rooms arranged around a large central hall called 'hayat'. Each room is meticulously furnished to suit the lifestyle of the period, enriched with divans, wooden cabinets, and niches. In some mansions, 'selamlık' sections, specially designed to host guests, and 'haremlik' sections, where family life took place, are located separately.
