Story

Afyonkarahisar Castle is built on a steep and volcanic rock mass that rises 226 meters in the exact center of the city. This natural monument has played a vital role in the region's defense since the Hittite period. Throughout history, it has been known as 'Hapanuva', 'Akroinos', and during the Seljuk period, it was called 'Karahisar' (Black Castle). The addition of the name 'Afyon' occurred during the Ottoman period, as the region became famous for its poppy (opium) production and trade. The castle's most notable feature is its nickname 'Zincirli Kale' (Chain Castle), derived from the chains surrounding the rock, constructed by Commander Uzun Mehmet. Although the first significant fortifications in the castle date back to the Hittites, its strategic importance peaked during the Byzantine and Seljuk periods. Particularly, the capture and reconstruction of the castle by Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad laid the foundations for its current robust structure. During the Ottoman Empire, the castle was used as a prison for a time, but it played its most unforgettable role during the Turkish War of Independence. The castle served as a strategic observation and communication point before and during the Great Offensive, taking on a critical mission in monitoring enemy movements. For this reason, it is regarded not only as a historical site but also as a national monument of heroism. At the summit of the castle, there are temple ruins believed to belong to the Phrygian goddess Kybele and water cisterns from the Byzantine period. The ascent to the summit is made via steep stairs, and although it is exhausting, it offers visitors a breathtaking panoramic view of the Afyonkarahisar Plain and the entire city. This castle stands as a living monument, showcasing how powerful and strategic a crossroads Afyon has been throughout history.
