Description

Adorning the historical fabric of Afyonkarahisar, Altıgöz Bridge is one of the city's significant cultural heritage sites.

Story

Altıgöz Bridge is a structure located in the center of Afyonkarahisar, over the Akarçay Stream, significantly contributing to the city's historical silhouette. Although the exact construction date of the bridge is unknown, it is believed to belong to the Seljuk or early Ottoman period due to its architectural features and similarities with other structures in the region. The reason it is popularly known as 'Altıgöz' (meaning 'Six Eyes') is either because the number of arches could vary depending on the water flow beneath the bridge, or it was originally built with six arches, though these arches are now buried under soil or have changed over time. The bridge was built from cut stone and has defied centuries with its robust structure. Architecturally, it has a simple yet powerful design that reflects the bridge-building techniques and aesthetics of its era. Its location on Afyonkarahisar's trade routes increased its strategic importance, facilitating the passage of caravans and travelers to the city. Therefore, beyond being just a crossing point, it played a central role in the economic and social life of the region. Today, Altıgöz Bridge remains one of the city's important symbols, along with the surrounding park and walking areas...
