Aslankaya Temple

An impressive rock-cut monumental tomb from the Phrygian period.

Story

Located near the town of Döğer in the İhsaniye district of Afyonkarahisar, the Aslankaya Temple is an important cult structure dating back to the Phrygian period. This monument, dated to the 8th century BC, is one of the finest examples of Phrygian rock-cut architecture. Aslankaya takes its name from the lion reliefs on its facade. On the front of the monument, there are two symmetrically placed large lion figures with a goddess statue in the center. This goddess is believed to be Cybele, the principal goddess of the Phrygians. Lions are considered sacred animals of Cybele and represent power and protection. The detailed craftsmanship and monumental scale of the structure reveal the artistic and religious development of Phrygia. The triangular pediment at the top of the monument and the geometric patterns below it are characteristic features of Phrygian architecture. The temple was originally an open-air sanctuary, used as a place for religious ceremonies and offerings. Along with other Phrygian monuments in the region, Aslankaya is a tangible proof of the Phrygian presence and cultural interactions in Anatolia. Visitors have the opportunity to trace the footsteps of a civilization from thousands of years ago while examining this unique structure.
