Bolvadin Burnt Barracks Museum
Description
A historical barracks building constructed in the late Ottoman period, used as an important base during the War of Independence.
Story
Bolvadin Yanık Kışla is a large military structure located in the Bolvadin district of Afyonkarahisar, built during the late Ottoman Empire (likely in the mid-19th century). The barracks were constructed for the purpose of deploying and training military units in the region. Built using stone and brick, the structure reflects the simple and functional characteristics of Ottoman military architecture of the time. Historically, it played its most critical role during the Turkish War of Independence. Due to its strategic importance because of its proximity to the Western Front, Yanık Kışla was used as a significant supply and logistics center behind the front lines during the war. The reason the barracks are named 'Yanık' (meaning 'burnt') is said to be due to a major fire that occurred during either a rebellion or an enemy attack. This fire led to the destruction of part of the structure, but it was subsequently repaired. After the War of Independence, the barracks remained empty for a time or were used for different purposes. Today, Yanık Kışla is being restored and is being considered as a cultural and social complex. It stands as an important monument symbolizing the resistance and sacrifices of Afyon during the National Struggle period. The imposing architecture and courtyard of the structure provide a valuable example for understanding the Ottoman military order and the conditions of the era. The barracks are located in the historic center of Bolvadin and, along with the surrounding old Bolvadin houses, offer visitors a rich historical texture.
