Natural Area

Description

It is a freshwater lake of tectonic origin, rich in biodiversity, and home to Turkey's second largest reed bed area.

Story

Eber Lake is located in the eastern part of Afyonkarahisar, between the districts of Bolvadin and Çay, and is one of Turkey's important wetlands. This freshwater lake, formed as a result of tectonic movements, is particularly famous for its extensive reed beds, which play a vital role in the lake's ecosystem. Eber Lake is recognized as an internationally significant Important Bird Area (IBA) because it hosts hundreds of different bird species, including those that are endangered. It is also important for the livelihoods of the local villagers, who engage in reed cutting and fishing activities around the lake. The area surrounding the lake is a paradise, especially in the winter months, where migratory birds stop and breed. Water levels can vary greatly with the seasons; during some dry periods, the surface of the lake can shrink significantly, posing a threat to the ecological balance of the region. Another interesting feature of the lake is the small islands formed by pieces of reeds and soil, known as 'kopak', that move across its surface. Eber Lake is significant not only for its natural wealth but also for the value it adds to the cultural life of historic districts like Bolvadin. Today, conservation efforts are ongoing due to threats from declining water levels and pollution. Eber Lake is a magnificent natural heritage that demonstrates the richness of not only Afyon's terrestrial ecosystems but also its wetland ecosystems.
