Description

A neighborhood located at the foothills of Afyon Castle, featuring bay-windowed, two-story buildings that reflect traditional Ottoman civil architecture.

Story

The Historical Afyon Houses, located at the very foot of Afyonkarahisar Castle, present some of the finest examples of traditional Ottoman civil architecture in narrow, cobblestone streets. These houses are typically two stories tall, constructed with a wooden frame and adobe filling, characterized by wooden bay windows that extend towards the street on their upper floors. Designed to withstand Afyon's harsh winter conditions, these structures generally feature large courtyards and wide windows. One of the most important centers of the neighborhood, Taşhan, was built in the 17th century and served as a significant accommodation and commercial activity center along trade routes. The han reflects typical Ottoman caravanserai architecture with its two-story courtyard structure and continues to function as a marketplace today. The old houses surrounding Taşhan have formed the heart of Afyon's commercial and social life during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. The streets where the houses are located offer visitors a time travel experience, accompanied by views of the castle. The labyrinthine structure of the streets and the historical fountains have helped preserve the region's cultural identity. In recent years, restoration efforts have transformed some of these houses into boutique hotels, cafes, and art galleries, contributing to tourism. This historical fabric demonstrates that Afyon is not just about its castle and thermal waters, but also possesses a rich urban culture and architectural heritage. To experience Afyon's traditional cuisine and artisan culture, this historic neighborhood is an indispensable stop.
