Story
The Afyonkarahisar Mevlevi Mosque is a significant religious and cultural heritage site that stands out with its central location in the city and its deep-rooted history. This mosque, which played a key role in the spread of Mevlevism in Anatolia, also served as a Mevlevihane (Mevlevi lodge). Although its exact construction date is unknown, the mosque is dated to the Seljuk or early Ottoman periods and has reached the present day through various repairs and additions over time. The architecture of the mosque carries the characteristic features of its period; it draws attention with its simple yet impressive interior and minaret. Especially the wooden craftsmanship and pen-work decorations are important details reflecting the artistic understanding of the period. The Mevlevi Mosque was not only a place of worship but also a center where the Mevlevi tradition was kept alive, Sema ceremonies were performed, and scholarly councils gathered. Throughout history, the mosque has held an important place in the social and cultural life of Afyonkarahisar and is also one of the rare structures that bear the traces of Mevlevi culture in the region. Today, the Mevlevi Mosque is actively open for worship, offering visitors both a historical atmosphere and an opportunity to experience the spirituality of Mevlevism. Around the mosque...
