Description

Located in the Kemerkaya town of Afyonkarahisar, Yedikapılar Rock Settlement is a complex of religious structures carved into rocks, dating back to the Byzantine period.

Story

Yedikapılar Rock Settlement is an impressive historical site carved into natural rock formations, located southwest of the Kemerkaya town in Afyonkarahisar. This settlement stands out as one of the important centers where religious and civil life coexisted, especially during the Byzantine period. The easily workable volcanic tuff rocks in the region played a key role in the formation of such rock settlements. The settlement houses a large complex consisting of churches, chapels, burial chambers, and living areas. Fresco remnants still visible on the walls indicate how magnificent these spaces once were and the influence of Byzantine art in the region. Especially the apses, niches, and altars within the religious structures provide important information about the worship practices of the period. Yedikapılar became an important sanctuary and living space for monks and religious groups due to its ideal geography for both defense and seclusion. The name of the settlement comes from the many different sections connected by passages and gates within the complex. Visitors embark on a journey through time as they explore these structures hidden among the rocks. With its natural beauty as well...
