Description

Balık Lake is one of Turkey's highest-altitude tectonic lakes, located at the intersection of Ağrı and Kars provinces.

Story

Balık Lake, situated between the Taşlıçay district of Ağrı and the Arpaçay district of Kars, at an altitude of approximately 2245 meters, is one of Turkey's largest and highest-altitude tectonic lakes. It was formed as a result of glacial melt and tectonic movements. The lake, integrated with the impressive scenery of the surrounding volcanic mountains, especially Mount Ağrı, offers its visitors a unique natural beauty. The lake's name comes from the pearl mullet (Alburnus tarichi) fish species that naturally live in it and are an important source of livelihood for the local people. This fish species is known for its reverse migration, especially during the breeding season, swimming upstream into rivers in Balık Lake, similar to what happens in Lake Van, which is scientifically and observationally very interesting. The lake and its surroundings host a rich biodiversity. It is an important stopover point, especially for birdwatchers; many migratory bird species prefer this area for breeding and feeding. The region is under the influence of a continental climate, with very harsh and snowy winters, and cool and rainy summers. These climatic conditions directly affect the diversity of the vegetation and wildlife around the lake. Balık Lake, not only...
