Meya Caves
Description
Located in the village of Günbuldu in Ağrı, the Meya Caves are an important archaeological and tourist site, notable for both their natural beauty and historical traces.
Story
The Meya Caves are a complex of natural and artificial caves carved into volcanic rocks, located within the borders of Günbuldu village, Doğubayazıt district, Ağrı province. The geological structure of the region played a significant role in the formation of these caves. Although the exact history of the caves has not been fully elucidated, archaeological findings in the vicinity and local narratives suggest that these caves have been used as a settlement since very ancient times. There are strong indications that they were used as places of retreat and hiding, especially during the early Christian period. The caves also reflect a similar cultural texture to the rock churches and underground cities in the region. Inside, there are many sections thought to have been used as living areas, places of worship, and storage. The architecture of the caves emerged from the shaping of natural rock formations by human hands. This structure, consisting of narrow passages, large rooms, and different layers, offers visitors a journey into the past. The fact that lighting systems have not yet been fully developed provides visitors with an authentic exploration experience, while also requiring them to bring equipment such as flashlights...
