Story

Saint Mercurius Underground City is a historical underground settlement section located in the town of Saratlı within the Gülağaç district of Aksaray and forms part of the Saratlı Underground City complex. It takes its name from Saint Mercurius, an important figure of early Christianity, and is considered a concrete example of religious underground usage in the region. This section was used for worship, shelter, and protection. Carved into soft tuff rock, the spaces include chapel-like areas, narrow corridors, and interconnected rooms. Saint Mercurius Underground City was especially preferred by Christian communities during periods of persecution and threat to hide and practice their faith safely. The architectural layout reflects a defensive approach prioritizing security. Archaeological evidence indicates intensive use during the Byzantine period. Today, evaluated together with Saratlı Underground City, this section offers visitors insight into early Christian underground life and religious practices. With its historical and religious identity, Saint Mercurius Underground City is an important part of Aksaray’s multi-layered cultural heritage.
