Story

Saratlı Underground City is a historical structure located in the town of Saratlı within the Gülağaç district of Aksaray and is considered one of the important examples of the underground settlement tradition in the Cappadocia region. Used since ancient times for defense, shelter, and protection, the city was carved into soft tuff rock. The multi-level structure consists of living areas, storage rooms, ventilation shafts, and narrow corridors. Saratlı Underground City was designed to allow local people to hide safely during periods of attack and oppression. Its layout made long-term underground living possible. Archaeological studies indicate that the site was intensively used during the Byzantine period. Today, the restored underground city is open to visitors and offers a close look into ancient underground life.
