Story

The Ferhat and Şirin Statue is a significant monument located in the city center of Amasya, on the banks of the Yeşilırmak River, visualizing one of the most poignant love epics of Turkish folk storytelling. This statue is not only an aesthetic work but also a powerful symbol that conveys the region's cultural identity and the deeply rooted legend of Ferhat and Şirin to visitors. According to the story, Ferhat falls in love with Şirin, the sister of Sultan Mehmene Banu of Amasya. The Sultan opposes this love and demands an impossible task from Ferhat: to bring water to the city by carving through mountains to quench its thirst. Ferhat begins to fulfill this arduous task with the power of his love. However, when Mehmene Banu sees that Ferhat is succeeding, she plays a trick and sends news to Ferhat that Şirin has died. Unable to bear this painful news, Ferhat throws his pickaxe into the air and dies when the falling pickaxe strikes him. Şirin, upon learning of Ferhat's death, takes her own life in the same place. The statue, erected in memory of this tragic love, combines with the natural beauty of Amasya to offer visitors a melancholic yet captivating atmosphere.
