The museum is housed in the historic building of the Amasya Darüşşifası, constructed between 1308-1309 by the Ilkhanid ruler Sultan Olcayto and his wife Uduz Hatun. The museum is named after Sabuncuoğlu Şerefeddin, one of the greatest physicians and surgeons of the Ottoman period, who lived in the 15th century.
