Story

Anitkabir is a monumental structure dedicated to Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic of Turkey, rising on a commanding hill in central Ankara known as Rasattepe. The foundation of the complex was laid in 1944, following an international architectural competition, and it was completed in 1953, then opened to the public. Anitkabir is not only a mausoleum but also a powerful symbol of the young republic’s core values, the principle of secularism, and the struggle for national independence. Visitors approach the complex via the broad Lion Road (Aslanlı Yol). On both sides of this path stand 24 lion statues inspired by Seljuk and Hittite art, representing the determination and dignified stance of the Turkish nation. At the end of the Lion Road, the ceremonial plaza and the monumental structures surrounding it create a strong sense of unity. Directly opposite the plaza rises the Mausoleum, whose architecture is simple yet striking. The Anatolian stones, colonnaded façade, and reliefs bring together both modern and traditional elements. On the lower floor of the Mausoleum is the Atatürk and War of Independence Museum, which deepens the visitor’s experience. Here, panoramic depictions of military campaigns from Gallipoli to Sakarya, alongside Atatürk’s personal belongings, manuscripts, and photographs, are exhibited. The narrative is designed in such a way that even a visitor unfamiliar with Turkish history can follow the War of Independence step by step. Thus Anitkabir goes beyond being merely a state venue for official ceremonies and becomes a space of collective memory accessible to everyone. On national holidays, and especially on November 10th, thousands of people from all over Turkey fill the ceremonial plaza. On regular days the atmosphere is calmer; you can stroll through the tree-lined Peace Park and enjoy views over Ankara. The changing of the guards, with soldiers’ measured steps and disciplined posture, attracts the attention of many visitors. All these features make Anitkabir a must-see destination for history enthusiasts as well as for anyone seeking a meaningful stop in the city.
