Beypazarı Historic Houses and Urban Conservation Area is like an open-air museum, preserving authentic examples of Ottoman civil architecture and a vibrant bazaar atmosphere.

Story

To the west of Ankara, clinging to the slope of a deep valley, the Beypazarı Historic Houses and Urban Conservation Area gives you the sensation of slowly being pulled back in time. Narrow stone alleys, three‑storey whitewashed mansions, wooden bay windows and latticed openings do not evoke an ordinary Anatolian town, but rather a prosperous center thriving on trade during the Ottoman era. Located on one of the branches of the Silk Road, Beypazarı was for centuries a regular stop for both merchants and travellers. Today, in the neighborhoods protected as an urban conservation area, there are around a thousand registered historic houses. Most of them were built in the 19th century; the ground floors served as storage, stables or shops, while the upper floors were living spaces for extended families. Timber‑frame structures with mudbrick infill, projecting bays and red‑tiled hipped roofs create the silhouette unique to Beypazarı. From the outside the mansions look modest, yet their interiors surprise visitors with painted ceiling decorations, carved wooden cupboards and built‑in storage niches. In the bazaar district, under the shadow of old caravanserais, you hear the rhythmic hammering of coppersmiths and watch filigree masters at work on delicate silver. Crispy Beypazarı biscuits, multi‑layered Beypazarı baklava and fresh carrot juice appear at every corner. Many of the old mansions now function as boutique hotels, museum houses or traditional restaurants, allowing visitors not only to admire the streets but also to step inside and sense how daily life once flowed. One of the most remarkable aspects of the conservation area is the view that opens over the Beypazarı plain as you climb the steep streets. Especially near sunset, the white façades and tiled roofs glow with a reddish light, creating an impressive panorama together with the town’s minarets. Thanks to preservation efforts, new construction is strictly controlled, so the traditional fabric has largely survived intact. The Beypazarı Historic Houses and Urban Conservation Area is an ideal stop for architecture enthusiasts, photographers and anyone seeking the authentic atmosphere of an Anatolian town. As you wander, you will notice that the streets form a kind of labyrinth; do not fear getting lost, as most paths eventually lead you back to the bazaar. From time to time, glance through open doors into inner courtyards and wooden staircases; these small details are the best way to grasp the character of Beypazarı.
