Story

Çengel Han is an important Ottoman structure located in the historic Ulus district of Ankara, in the Samanpazarı area, believed to have been built in the late 15th or early 16th century. Although there is no definitive information about the exact construction date and patron of the building, it is estimated to have played a significant role in the trade life of its period. Caravanserais (hans) in the Ottoman Empire were centers where caravans stayed, goods were stored, and trade took place. Çengel Han also contributed to Ankara's commercial vitality by fulfilling these functions. The building has a two-story, courtyard plan, and is a fine example of typical Ottoman caravanserai architecture. The lower floors were generally used as stables and warehouses, while the upper floors were reserved for travelers' accommodation. The han's courtyard, which in the past housed caravans and animals, now serves as a central area offering a peaceful resting place. Çengel Han, used for various purposes for many years, was restored by Rahmi Koç in 2005 and became part of the Rahmi M. Koç Museum.
