Story

Zindan Tower is an imposing structure rising on the inner walls, at the northeast corner of Ankara Castle. It takes its name from its past use as a dungeon. Believed to have been built on Roman-era ruins, the tower underwent significant repairs and additions during the Byzantine and Seljuk periods. During the Ottoman Empire, it was primarily used for military purposes, playing a critical role in the city's defense. The tower has a square plan, and its outer walls are quite thick and robust. Both Roman and Byzantine influences can be seen in its architecture. The stonework and mortar remnants on the walls, in particular, shed light on the tower's construction and repair activities during different periods.
