Description

Located near Haymana in Ankara, the Gavurkale Rock Monument is an ancient Hittite cult site set on a sacred rocky hilltop, notable for its reliefs and defensive structures.

Story

The Gavurkale Rock Monument is an ancient cult center hidden among the rolling steppe hills between Haymana and Polatlı, south of Ankara. At first glance it looks modest, yet a closer look reveals traces of a powerful civilization. The word “gavur” in its Turkish name reflects how local people, for centuries unable to identify these remains, attributed them to “infidels”; today we know that this was a sacred place of the Hittite world in the second millennium BC. The settlement was built along a rocky ridge, taking advantage of its natural defenses. As you climb the steep slopes towards the monument, the remains of walls and small chambers appear first. Then, rock‑cut steps lead you to the summit terrace where the Hittite reliefs are found. Here, human‑shaped divine figures and stylised lions carved into the rock face greet visitors with a calm yet determined gaze reaching from thousands of years ago. The reliefs are not extremely detailed, but the posture of the figures, their headdresses and the signs beside them suggest that this was an elite monument connected to the royal court or to a major ceremonial route. Archaeological research shows that Gavurkale was more than a simple rock carving. It formed a small complex with storage buildings, terraces and probably a watchtower. Its commanding position over the steppe suggests that it could have served both religious ceremonies and strategic control. When visitors come in spring, they see Hittite stonework framed by the soft colours of the blooming steppe, which makes the site particularly appealing for photographers. The road to Gavurkale is partially unpaved in its final section, but still accessible by regular cars. Signage around the rocks is limited, so visitors should wear walking shoes and bring essentials such as a hat and water for sun protection. On this quiet hill, where only the wind and distant village sounds break the silence, standing for a moment in front of the reliefs offers a rare chance to reflect on the layered history of Anatolia. Gavurkale is not a typical stop for crowded tour buses, which turns the time you spend here into a calm and personal experience.
