Story
The Great Tumulus is a monumental burial mound located within the borders of Ankara's Yenimahalle district, specifically on the grounds of Ankara University's Faculty of Agriculture. While this tumulus is generally dated to the Phrygian period, it is evaluated within a broader chronological framework in light of archaeological findings in the region. Tumuli are artificial hills created in ancient times by piling earth over the graves of important individuals, kings, or nobles. The Great Tumulus, due to its size and location, suggests it belonged to a person of great importance in its time. Surface surveys and limited excavations in the area indicate that this site may not only be a tomb but also a cult area connected to surrounding settlements. The architecture of the tumulus reflects the advanced engineering knowledge and craftsmanship skills of its period. Typically, it contains one or more burial chambers, which are filled with various ritual objects, valuable possessions of the deceased, and everyday items.
