Story

The İnönü Caves are an important historical and natural site located in the northwest of Ankara's Güdül district, on the steep and rugged rocky slopes on the western bank of the Kirmir Stream. The region's geological structure, consisting of soft rocks such as volcanic tuff and andesite, allowed for the formation and shaping of these caves over thousands of years. Archaeological research indicates that the history of the caves dates back to the Paleolithic Age. This suggests that the caves were used by humans for shelter, refuge, and perhaps even cultic purposes from prehistoric times. The caves, thought to have been used during the Roman and Byzantine periods, may have been preferred especially for defense and concealment. Wall paintings and carved figures seen in parts of the caves reveal the cultural richness of the region. While some of the caves were used more as shelters or storage, others were arranged as living spaces, containing elements such as niches and seating areas.
