Description

Juliopolis Necropolis, located in the Nallıhan district of Ankara, is an important Roman-era cemetery.

Story

Juliopolis Necropolis is a striking archaeological site from the Roman Empire period, situated on the banks of the Aladağ Stream in the Çayırhan region of Ankara's Nallıhan district. First discovered in 2009 through salvage excavations carried out by the Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, the necropolis revealed the region's importance in ancient times. The necropolis area constitutes the cemetery of the ancient city of Juliopolis. This ancient city was an important settlement in the Galatia region and stood out as a commercial and strategic center during the Roman period. Hundreds of tombs have been unearthed in the necropolis to date, and these tombs, with both their architectural structures and their contents, offer invaluable information about the funeral traditions, social structure, and artistic understanding of the period. Tomb types include sarcophagi, cist graves, and rock-cut tombs. Especially the reliefs and inscriptions on the sarcophagi provide detailed information about the identities, professions, and even family ties of the deceased. Marble statues, terracotta figurines, glass vessels, bronze jewelry, and various ceramic artifacts found during the excavations shed light on the daily life of the people of Juliopolis...
