Description

The Kızılcahamam Geopark Area is a rich geological heritage site north of Ankara, known for its volcanic rocks, fossils, and thermal springs.

Story

The Kızılcahamam Geopark Area stretches like a threshold between the rolling plateaus of Central Anatolia and the forest belt of the Western Black Sea, north of Ankara. Over tens of millions of years, intense volcanic activity, uplift, and erosion have turned this region into an extraordinary open-air geological laboratory. Lava flows, tuff layers, columnar basalts, and rock strata in different colors present the Earth’s evolutionary story to visitors like the pages of an open book. The known human history of the geopark is far more recent than its geology, yet people have used the area as a place of rest and healing for thousands of years thanks to its warm and hot springs. The spa tradition that began in the Roman and Byzantine periods continued through the Ottoman era and into Modern Turkey, turning Kızılcahamam into one of Ankara’s leading resorts and health destinations. Today the geopark is recognized on a national scale not only for its therapeutic waters, but also for the fossils and rock formations that are the subject of scientific research. Within the area there are marked hiking trails, viewing terraces, and informative panels. With a short walk along the paths, visitors can see the flanks of an ancient volcano and explore valley sides where fossil-rich sedimentary layers are exposed. In some locations, it is possible to observe fossils that bear the traces of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago, as long as protection rules are respected. The wide landscape, combined with rocky ridges that turn red at sunset, creates striking scenes for photography enthusiasts. The Kızılcahamam Geopark Area is also an important site for geology and nature education. School groups, university students, and outdoor clubs frequently use the area for field courses. The panels explain complex geological processes in simple language, helping non-specialists understand how volcanism, tectonics, and erosion have worked together to create the present-day scenery. In the nearby district center, accommodation and spa facilities make it easy to combine a day spent in the geopark with a comfortable rest. For nature walkers, photographers, birdwatchers, and geotourism enthusiasts, the Kızılcahamam Geopark Area offers a rich and instructive escape reachable from Ankara with only a short journey.
