Description

Mahmut Pasha Bedesten is a historical building located in the Altındağ district of Ankara, which currently serves as the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations.

Story

Mahmut Pasha Bedesten was built in the mid-15th century by Mahmut Pasha, one of the viziers of Murad II. This bedesten, constructed during the Ottoman Empire, was one of the important trade centers of its time. Bedestens are typically domed, thick-walled, and secure bazaar structures where valuable goods were sold and stored. Mahmut Pasha Bedesten served this purpose, playing a significant role in Ankara's commercial life. Over time, the structure served various functions, was damaged by natural disasters such as earthquakes and fires, but was repaired each time. During the Republican era, under the directives of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, it was restored and opened as the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in the 1940s. This transformation further enhanced the historical and cultural importance of the building. The museum houses a rich collection of archaeological artifacts spanning a wide period from the Paleolithic Age to the Ottoman era. Artifacts belonging to the Hittite, Phrygian, and Urartian civilizations, in particular, have made the museum world-renowned. The architecture of the bedesten bears the characteristics of the Ottoman classical period. Its spacious, domed interiors and robust stonework reflect the engineering and aesthetics of the era.
