METU Forest
Description
An artificial forested area located on the Middle East Technical University campus, one of Ankara's important green spaces.
Story
METU Forest, while not directly fitting into the category of Civil Architecture, can be considered part of the university campus planning. It is a massive man-made green area. In the late 1950s, with the establishment of METU, a project to green the barren land was initiated under the leadership of the then rector, Kemal Kurdaş. This project was more than just an afforestation effort; it was a revolutionary initiative that brought life to Ankara's arid land and re-established ecological balance. Through years of intensive work, with the participation of thousands of students, faculty members, and volunteers, the lush green forest we see today emerged. The forest has become an important recreational area not only for university students and staff but also for all residents of Ankara. It features walking trails, bicycle paths, ponds, and picnic areas. Offering an ideal environment for birdwatching, METU Forest is a peaceful escape for those seeking to get away from the city noise. Although not an architectural structure, this large-scale landscape arrangement is considered an important part of a campus and, consequently, a 'settlement'.
