Description

The Ruins of St. Clement's Church, located in Ankara's Altındağ district, are one of the city's significant remnants from the Byzantine period.

Story

Rising in the historical heart of Ankara, in the Altındağ district, the Ruins of St. Clement's Church are an important structure bearing witness to the city's rich past. These ruins, particularly carrying traces from the Byzantine period, reveal Ankara's role in Christian history. Although the exact date of the church's construction is not certain, it is believed to have been built during the Byzantine Empire, likely in the 6th or 7th centuries. Archaeological excavations and architectural analyses in the region indicate that the structure had the typical basilica plan of that era. Understood to be a three-aisled structure with an apse, the church was largely destroyed over time due to earthquakes, wars, and natural conditions. Among the surviving remains are foundation walls, some column bases, and traces belonging to the apse section. Even these remnants reveal how magnificent the structure once was and how central a place of worship it served for the Christian community in the region. Ankara has hosted many civilizations throughout history and was an important center during the Roman and Byzantine periods. St. Clement's Church also played a significant role in the religious and cultural life of this period...
