Soguksu National Park
Description
Located in Ankara’s Kızılcahamam district, Soguksu National Park is a protected area of pine forests, cool climate and hiking trails, ideal for a nature getaway.
Story
Soguksu National Park appears like a vast sea of forest spread across the cool slopes of Kızılcahamam, only about an hour away from Ankara’s crowded and noisy center. The park takes its name from the cool spring waters that emerge from its foothills and serves as a natural refuge, especially for those seeking to escape the scorching summer heat of the capital. Protected since the 1950s, this area is one of the important examples of the growing environmental awareness and nature conservation efforts of “modern Turkey” in the Republican era. The defining character of the park is created by towering black pine and Scots pine forests. The light filtering through the trees meets a thin layer of mist in the early morning, giving the trails a soft, almost story-like atmosphere. One of Soguksu’s most important inhabitants is the cinereous vulture, a rare and endangered species in Turkey. Most visitors walk through the park without ever seeing it, but if you notice a broad-winged shadow gliding silently above you, it is very likely that you have crossed paths with this impressive bird. For this reason, Soguksu is also a special stop for birdwatchers. Hiking lies at the heart of the visitor experience in the national park. Trails reinforced with wooden steps wind into the heart of the forest and lead to several viewing platforms. From these terraces, you can watch the roofs of Kızılcahamam peek through the trees while distant hills fade into the horizon. In spring, crocuses, poppies and wildflowers appear along the paths; in autumn, the trees turn yellow, orange and red, transforming the park into a natural studio for photography enthusiasts. Soguksu National Park impresses not only with its scenery but also with its tranquillity. Its ability to offer such deep silence while being so close to Ankara has made it one of the indispensable weekend picnic destinations for local residents. Large picnic fields, children’s playgrounds and organized recreation areas make it easy for families to spend the day here comfortably. However, this intensive use also brings a responsibility to protect nature; the park administration enforces strict rules on lighting fires, leaving litter and disturbing wildlife. At the visitor center, you will find panels explaining the park’s ecological structure and the mammal and bird species that live here. For children growing up in Ankara and only now becoming familiar with nature, this space is an educational stop for understanding a forest ecosystem. In winter, when the park is covered with snow, it takes on a completely different identity under a white blanket; the silence deepens, the tree trunks become more distinct, and hikes turn into slightly more challenging yet highly rewarding experiences. Rather than being a historical monument, Soguksu National Park is a living ecosystem and a symbol of modern Turkey’s efforts to protect nature. Visitors who come here will not see a palace or a fortress; instead, they will find a forest that is constantly changing as it breathes, renewed with each season, and they will capture a brief moment that feels entirely their own in the heart of this landscape.
