Alanya Shipyard
Description
It is one of the best-preserved shipyards of the Mediterranean, built during the Seljuk period.
Story
Alanya Shipyard is one of the most concrete indicators of the Seljuks' policies to dominate the Mediterranean. Built in 1228 by Sultan I. Alaeddin Keykubad, it is considered one of the most modern maritime structures of its time. The shipyard has five arches, with each arched section providing separate areas for shipbuilding and repair. It forms an integrated defense system together with the Red Tower; the entries and exits to the harbor were controlled by both the tower and the shipyard. During the Seljuk period, trade ships, war vessels, and coastal defense crafts were produced here. Historians emphasize that the shipyard played a vital role both militarily and economically. At the entrance of the shipyard, there is an inscription of the sultan; this inscription is regarded as one of the pride monuments of Seljuk maritime history. One of the legends suggests that upon its completion, Sultan Keykubad admired the craftsmanship of the masters while touring the shipyard and rewarded them with great gifts. The shipyard remained in active use during the Ottoman period, but over time, it lost its function with the emergence of new technologies. Today, it is still possible to see the traces of maritime history in its stone walls. The clarity of the seawater right in front of the shipyard, combined with the historical atmosphere, offers visitors a unique experience. It is one of the strongest symbols of Alanya's relationship with the sea.
